The Blues Foundation honors outstanding Blues
artists and musicians through the annual Memphis WC Handy Blues
Awards - the highest recognition bestowed on Blues artists in
the music industry. This year The Blues Foundation selected Bettye
LaVette's “A
Woman Like Me" as "Blues Comeback Album of the Year".
Bettye was also nominated in three other categories
- Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year - Soul Blues Album of
the Year - and
Traditional Blues Female Artist of the Year.
In an online poll for About.com she was voted the winner in
all four categories.
"The 25th W.C. Handy Blues Awards proved to
be one of the most successful events in Foundation history.
The silver anniversary was held in before a sold-out crowd
at the Cannon Center Ballroom in Memphis, TN on Thursday, April
29, 2004. More than 25 nominees performed throughout the evening,
which featured a dinner, silent auction and of course the presentation
of the awards."
